Plumber call-out charges in the UK

What plumbers charge just to come out, whether it covers any work, and how to compare quotes fairly.

IN SHORT

Many UK plumbers don't charge a separate call-out fee and simply bill their hourly rate, says Checkatrade. Where there is one, a weekday daytime call-out is typically £80 to £120, according to MyBuilder. Several guides say it often covers the first hour of work, but that isn't a rule.

This page is part of our guide to plumbing costs in the UK. A call-out charge is what some plumbers charge for coming to your home, on top of or instead of their first hour of work. Every figure below has its source named and dated at the bottom of the page.

Plumber call-out charges in the UK

A daytime call-out from a plumber typically falls between £50 and £120 across the cost guides we read, and many plumbers don't charge one at all. Checkatrade says there's no standard fixed call-out fee. It says plumbers often charge their hourly or day rate instead, except for emergencies.

Where plumbers do charge one, the main sources give these figures.

SOURCECALL-OUTFIRST HOUR INCLUDED?
MyBuilder, August 2026£80 to £120, weekday daytimeNot stated
MyJobQuote, toilet unblocking guide, September 2026£75 to £100Given as a call-out or first-hour fee
BestBuilders, 2026£60 to £110 outside London and the South East; £90 to £160 insideOften
Gas Engineer Software, July 2026£60 to £120Often
Checkatrade, March 2026No standard fee; many charge the hourly rate insteadNot applicable

You may see Checkatrade quote a call-out of about £110. That's its figure for an emergency call-out, not a daytime one. Our guide to emergency plumber costs covers out-of-hours prices.

Does the call-out include the first hour?

It often does, but it isn't a rule. MyJobQuote, BestBuilders, Gas Engineer Software and Fantastic Services all describe a call-out that commonly covers the first hour of work. None of them says every plumber works this way.

WaterSafe Register puts it plainly: some plumbers include an initial period of labour in the call-out, and others charge it separately. MyJobQuote's guide to unblocking a drain says a drainage contractor's call-out usually covers the first hour when the visit is booked in advance. Its emergency or out-of-hours call-out is higher, at £100 to £200.

So the only safe approach is to ask. Two plumbers can both quote "£90 call-out" and mean quite different things.

When call-out fees cost more

Call-outs cost more late at night, at weekends and on holidays. MyBuilder splits its figures by time of day.

  • Weekday daytime: £80 to £120
  • Late night: £100 to £140
  • Weekend: £120 to £150
  • Holiday: £130 to £180 (MyBuilder doesn't say whether this means bank holidays)

Checkatrade puts an emergency call-out at £100 to £120, with an average of £110. London and the South East cost more too: BestBuilders gives £90 to £160 there, against £60 to £110 elsewhere.

How to compare quotes with and without a call-out

Compare the total for your job, not the call-out or the hourly rate on its own. A plumber with no call-out and a higher hourly rate can work out cheaper, or dearer, than one with a call-out and a lower rate. It depends how long the job takes.

For each quote, ask:

  • Is there a call-out charge, and how much is it?
  • Does it include any work? If so, how long: 30 minutes, an hour?
  • What's the rate after that, and is it charged by the hour or the half hour?
  • Is there a minimum charge?
  • Are parts included, and is VAT included?

Checkatrade suggests asking about any minimum charge, because a job that takes one hour can cost more than the hourly rate suggests. Citizens Advice recommends getting written quotes from at least three traders, showing the total price, what's included and whether VAT is added.

EXAMPLE

A Fishponds homeowner needs a running toilet fixed, which should take about 40 minutes. Plumber A charges a £70 call-out that includes the first hour, then £40 an hour. Plumber B has no call-out, charges £60 an hour and has a one-hour minimum. For this job, A costs £70 and B costs £60. If the job turned into three hours, A would cost £150 and B £180. These are made-up numbers to show the method, not real prices.

Better still, ask for a fixed price for the whole job. Clear photos of the problem make that much easier for the plumber. Our guide to what plumbers charge per hour explains hourly rates and minimum charges in more detail.
