Plumbers in Brislington, Knowle and Totterdown
From Totterdown's steep painted terraces, along the Wells Road ridge to Knowle, and east to Brislington's old village by St Luke's Church.
IN SHORT
Fill My Day will cover all of BS4 at launch. A plumbing job in Brislington, Knowle or Totterdown will be sent to checked plumbers who are free and close enough to reach it. It's meant for the jobs that keep slipping down the list, like a toilet that won't stop filling on a street too steep to park on easily. It's coming soon, and not live yet.
Homes here and the jobs they need
BS4 mixes an old village core with long streets of terraces and semis. In Census 2021, half of all households in Brislington West lived in a terraced house, and 42% in Brislington East. In Knowle, semi-detached houses lead at 43%, with terraces close behind at 37%. About two thirds of households in all three wards own their home, and private renting, at 16% to 21%, is lower than the city-wide 26% for Bristol. Knowle has the most social renting of the three, at 17%. We couldn't confirm which ward Totterdown falls in, so these figures may leave it out.
The oldest part is Brislington's village core, which has its own conservation area. The council's 1993 statement describes cottages, shops and pubs with 18th-century roots around St Luke's Church, Hollywood Road and Church Hill, in random stone and painted render under pantiled roofs. Knowle and Totterdown have no conservation area. Local histories on Wikipedia, not yet checked against council records, describe Totterdown as mostly mid to late Victorian terraces built for railway workers and known for their bright colours, and Knowle as a mix of council-built cottages from the early 1920s, semis from later that decade and more interwar semis on Broad Walk.
So the plumbing you'll find depends on which of the three you live in. A stone cottage in Brislington's old village may have pipe runs a plumber will want to see before giving a firm price. Knowle's interwar council homes were plumbed to the standards of their day, and most have probably been updated since. Totterdown's terraces are older still, and on slopes this steep a plumber will want to know which floor the problem is on and how many steps lead to your door. And if you're one of Knowle's social tenants, a repair will usually go through your landlord first. Brislington, Knowle and Totterdown are all in Bristol City, which Bristol Water supplies, and it describes its water as moderately hard to very hard; over the years, scale can be one reason a toilet's fill valve stops shutting off cleanly.
Getting a plumber to your door
In BS4 the hills, more than permits, decide how easy a small job is to reach. Totterdown rises steeply from the River Avon, with a tight web of very steep roads in Upper Totterdown, and Vale Street is said to be England's steepest residential street, although no gradient has been published. Knowle sits on a ridge along Wells Road that falls away north to the river, and in old Brislington, Frys Lane is a steep stone-paved alley. When the nearest space is a climb from your door, the walk with tools and parts becomes part of the job, and that's often why small plumbing jobs are hard to get done.
Permits are rarely the problem. None of Bristol City Council's 19 residents' parking scheme areas is named after Brislington, Knowle or Totterdown (as of 17 October 2026), so on most streets there's nothing to arrange. We haven't checked whether new schemes are being consulted on, so look at the signs on your street.
Totterdown sits on the edge of Bristol's Clean Air Zone. After residents objected, the boundary was drawn to leave out the Three Lamps junction, so a van coming in on Bath Road can turn up Wells Road without entering it, according to the Totterdown residents' group TRESA. Carrying on along Bath Road towards the centre leads into the zone, where a diesel van older than the Euro 6 standard pays £9 for the day. Brislington and Knowle are outside it. Check the council's map for your street.
How Fill My Day will work in Brislington
When it launches, Fill My Day will show nearby plumbers with free time your description and photos before they reply, so in Totterdown that's the place to mention the hill and where to park. Our guide to same-day plumbing in Bristol walks through the rest.
EXAMPLE
At 2pm, a shower valve swap on Wells Road in Knowle is finished early. The plumber opens a window until 5pm, three miles from Knowle. In Upper Totterdown, a toilet keeps refilling; its owner has added a cistern photo and where to find a level space. That job reaches the plumber, who quotes for a new fill valve.
Nearby areas
- Bedminster, Southville and Windmill Hill (BS3): Windmill Hill ward borders Knowle and Brislington West, and part of Totterdown is in BS3.
- Kingswood and Hanham (BS15): Brislington East borders Hanham, across the line in South Gloucestershire.
What it costs
For a toilet that won't stop filling, the likely fix is a new valve: Which?'s survey of its Trusted Traders puts replacing a faulty ball valve at £50 to £300, parts included but not VAT (May 2026), usually in an hour or two. If it's charged by the hour instead, see what plumbers charge per hour: £40 to £60 nationally, say Checkatrade (June 2026) and MyBuilder (August 2026), while MyJobQuote's emergency guide (October 2026) gives £60 to £75 for Bristol and doesn't make clear whether that's a daytime or out-of-hours figure.

GOOD TO KNOW
Questions,
answered straight.
Is Totterdown in the Clean Air Zone?
It's on the edge. The local residents' group TRESA reports that the Three Lamps junction, and St John's Lane up to Wells Road, were left outside, but Bath Road towards the centre leads in. Check your street on the council's map.
Do I need to give a plumber a parking permit in Brislington or Knowle?
Usually not. None of Bristol City Council's residents' parking schemes is named after Brislington, Knowle or Totterdown, as of 17 October 2026. Check the signs on your street to be sure.
How can I help a plumber reach a steep street in Totterdown?
When you post a job after launch, say where the nearest easy parking is, and whether there are steps up to your door. In Upper Totterdown that can decide whether a short job is worth the trip.
