Plumbers in Kingswood and Hanham

A former coal-mining town and its neighbour Hanham, just over Bristol's city boundary in South Gloucestershire.

IN SHORT

Kingswood and Hanham are part of Fill My Day's Bristol launch. Once the app is live, a plumbing job here will reach checked plumbers whose free time and travel distance stretch to BS15, even though it's South Gloucestershire rather than Bristol City. It's built for the kind of small job nobody wants to cross the city for, like a toilet that takes an age to refill. It's coming soon, not live yet.

Homes here and the jobs they need

Kingswood and Hanham are run by South Gloucestershire Council, not Bristol City Council, though they're part of our Bristol launch. BS15 does include some Bristol streets on its western edge, and Wikipedia notes that locals often count Two Mile Hill and St George East as Kingswood, although both are in Bristol.

The two wards have quite different homes. In Census 2021, terraced houses were the most common home in Kingswood ward, at 41% of households, followed by semis at 26% and purpose-built flats at 19%. Hanham leans the other way: 38% semi-detached, 28% terraced and 22% detached. In Hanham, 78% of households own their home and 43% own it outright. In Kingswood, 63% own and 24% rent privately, a little below the 26% for Bristol City.

We found no official description of the housing here, and South Gloucestershire's list of conservation areas wouldn't load for us, so we can't say whether any cover these streets. Wikipedia traces Kingswood's growth to coal mining from the late 1600s, and notes that the old Hanham Hall hospital site became the UK's first eco-town trial development.

For plumbing, a useful first question here is the water itself. Bristol Water serves Bristol and only parts of South Gloucestershire, and we haven't confirmed street by street that it supplies Kingswood and Hanham, so its postcode checker is the place to check whether it supplies you, and how hard your water is. Where it does supply, Bristol Water rates its water as moderately hard to very hard, because of local limestone, and suggests descaling appliances and keeping hot water below 60°C to limit scale. In Hanham, where so many homes are owned outright, the same taps and valves may have been in use for many years, so that's worth knowing before a small fault becomes a bigger one.

Getting a plumber to your door

In BS15, which council your street is under sets the parking rules, and the line runs through the postcode itself: some streets on the western edge are Bristol's, the rest South Gloucestershire's. We haven't yet checked whether South Gloucestershire runs residents' parking schemes in Kingswood or Hanham, so we can't tell you what applies. What we do know is that a Bristol City Council trader permit won't help on the South Gloucestershire side, because it only covers that council's own schemes. If there are signs on your street, or you have a drive, mention it when you post.

East of the city, the journey can outweigh the job. A plumber who has spent the morning in Clifton or Bedminster faces a long drive across Bristol for a short fix in Hanham, and travel like that is why small plumbing jobs wait. A plumber finishing in St George or Kingswood itself is much closer.

The Clean Air Zone is a city-centre matter, not a BS15 one: a plumber's van can work in Kingswood and Hanham all day without the charge.

How Fill My Day will work in Kingswood

Once it launches, a plumber finishing early in Kingswood will be able to open a window and be sent a job a short drive away in Hanham: the kind of job they'd never cross Bristol for. See how a same-day plumber in Bristol will be matched.

EXAMPLE

Half eleven, and a morning job in Kingswood is done. The plumber sets a window until 3pm, three miles. In Hanham, someone has posted that their toilet cistern now takes an age to refill, with a photo inside it and "any time today". It's a fit, so it reaches the plumber, who sends a price to clean or replace the valve.

What it costs

Many plumbers don't charge a separate call-out fee, Checkatrade says (March 2026), but where one applies, MyBuilder (August 2026) puts a weekday daytime visit at £80 to £120, and MyJobQuote's emergency guide (October 2026) lists £75 to £95 for Bristol without saying whether that covers standard work. A slow-filling cistern often comes down to the valve that refills it, and Which? (May 2026) found its Trusted Traders charge £50 to £300 for a new toilet ball valve, including parts but not VAT.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions,
answered straight.

Is Kingswood part of Bristol?

Not for council purposes. Kingswood and Hanham are in South Gloucestershire, although BS15 takes in some Bristol City streets on its western edge. Fill My Day's Bristol launch includes both.

Who supplies the water in Kingswood and Hanham?

Bristol Water supplies parts of South Gloucestershire, but we haven't confirmed which BS15 streets. Its postcode checker will tell you whether it supplies your street and, if it does, how hard your water is.

Will a plumber's van be charged for coming to Kingswood?

Not by Bristol's Clean Air Zone, which is well away from here, in central Bristol. An older diesel van is only charged £9 for a day it's actually driven inside the zone.
